Action plans and protection of ground squirrels

Unfortunately, the number of endangered species is still increasing, in most cases due to the human activities. The main aim of the protection of species is to provide conditions for survival of endangered species in nature. However, for some species the common instruments of protection (such as protection of habitat) are not sufficient and it is necessary to use some special methods. For these species are organized so-called action plans. Among such species belongs the European Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus citellus). We can find also other endangered species within ground squirrels from the tribe Marmotini Pocock, 1923 as well. These species need the special protection methods, like captive breeding, repatriation and translocation of individuals or special management of the habitat. In this work are processed data about protection of genera Cynomys, Marmota and Spermophilus, especially White-tailed Prairie Dog (C. leucurus), Utah Prairie Dog (C. parvidens), Alpine Marmot (M. marmota), Vancouver Island Marmot (M. vancouverensis), Idaho Ground Squirrel (S. brunneus), European Ground Squirrel (S. citellus), Franklin's Ground Squirrel (S. franklinii), Speckled Ground Squirrel (S. suslicus) and Washington ground squirrel (S. washingtoni). Fitness comparison of the European ground squirrel's populations living in different habitats and population density

Fitness in ground squirrels is a frequently discussed topic, reported in many publications, although it was rarely the subject of their study. The aim of this study was to determine which factors and find out how they affect the fitness of individuals, and thus the whole population of the European ground squirrel in Czech Republic. For this purpose we collected body mass data at three studied population, which are the main indicator of the fitness in ground squirrels. We also recorded information about injuries, reproduction status, ectoparasites and endoparasites. Moreover we collected all available data on the body mass of European ground squirrel in the central European region, and we compiled overview of body mass changes during the season. This enables us to compare our data with typical/common body mass value in particular sex, age and season. Recorded differences in body mass at three studied sites were related to sex, age, locality and season. We found positive correlation between the body mass and injuries from fights/reproduction activity in adult males. Genetic variability in the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) in Czech Republic

The European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) (hereinafter EGS) is under the Law on Nature Protection and is included as a critically endangered into the Red List of Endangered Species. In the Czech Republic, which represents the northwestern border of the species range, EGS currently occurs on 34 localities, which are relatively small and isolated from each other. The spread of this species to central Europe was connected with neolithic deforestation. Disjunctive type of distribution of EGS was caused by strong decline of its abundance during the second half of the 20th century due to changes in field management, fragmentation of landscape and other factors. It can be expected that this process left traces on the genetic structure of EGS populations. The major objective of this study was a detailed analysis of genetic variability of EGS populations in the Czech Republic and searching for corelations with available data about its biology and demography. It was used 13 microsatellite loci and in total were processed 408 samples from 27 localities in CZ and 3 samples from one Hungarian locality as an outgroup. Výzkum ekologie a rozšíření‚ návrh managementu populací a záchranných programů zvláště chráněných druhů živočichů: Projekty aktivní podpory ohrožených živočichů v České republice

Snahou sborníku je pokusit se shrnout dosavadní zkušenosti s aktivní podporou některých ohrožených živočichů a využít je pro další rozvoj a zefektivnění projektů tohoto typu. Realizovaných projektů bylo velké množství, mnohé z nich po sobě nezanechaly žádnou publikační ani jinou stopu, jiné jsou zdokumentovány pouze nedostatečně a nelze je nijak hodnotit. Do hodnocení se tak dostaly zejména projekty hrazené z veřejných rozpočtů, u kterých je stanovena povinnost podání zprávy o realizaci projektu. Hodnoceny byly aktivity realizované od roku 1980, v případě, že byl určitý projekt významný z metodologického hlediska nebo má přímé vazby na současnost, bylo možno zahrnout i projekty starší. Hodnocení celostátně koordinovaných projektů a dále všech, u kterých došlo k jakýmkoliv reintrodukcím. Projekty byly věnovány těmto živočichům: vodní měkkýši, rak říční, motýli, blanokřídlí, ryby, obojživelníci, želva bahenní, ještěrka zelená, ostatní plazi, užovka stromová, hohol severní, drop velký, tetřev hlušec, čáp bílý, moták lužní, puštík bělavý, sova pálená, sýček obecný, sýc rousný, ledňáček říční, netopýři, sysel obecný, bobr evropský, vydra říční a rys ostrovid.

Výzkum ekologie a rozšíření‚ návrh managementu populací a záchranných programů zvláště chráněných druhů živočichů: Záchranný program dropa velkého (Otis tarda) v České republice

Drop velký patří mezi světově ohrožené druhy ptáků. Jeho početnost ve střední Evropě v posledních několika desítkách let prudce poklesla, ve většině zemí řádově. Záchranný program pro dropa velkého v České republice je založen na předpokladu, že pokud se pro tento druh v oblastech jeho tradičního výskytu obnoví vhodné podmínky, vrátí se. Tento přístup vychází především z toho, že v blízké oblasti Dolního Rakouska, Západním Weinviertelu, prosperuje zatím nevelká skupina dropů, která však každoročně narůstá. Většina opatření záchranného programu se tedy soustřeďuje na vytvoření takového prostředí, v němž by drop velký našel vhodné podmínky pro celoroční pobyt, tj. období toku, hnízdění i zimování. Péče o biotop je finančně nejnáročnější částí záchranného programu, protože směřuje k pěstování plodin pro zemědělce ekonomicky nezajímavých, činnostem, které budou znamenat snížení výnosů či zvýšení nákladů, nebo ke změnám, jejichž cílem je travní porost či úhor. Je navržena řada opatření směřujících k osvětě a výchově.
